610800 Matteuccia struthiopteris 'The King'  -  Ostrich Fern 'The King'

Part Shade  4-6’  Zone3

Sometimes also called the Jumbo Ostrich Fern. Our supplier, Casa Flora says, “Huge plume like fronds from this ancient strain of Matteuccia struthopteris will add both beauty and depth to landscape plantings in the northern zones. This selection of Ostrich has an enormous crown and fertile fronds that are 50% larger than those on native Ostrich fern.”

This huge fern provides excellent contrast for large hostas, especially the large blues like 'Blue Angel', or as a background to show off large gold hostas.  Very dramatic in large plantings.

610900  Onoclea sensibilis  -  Sensitive Fern

Part Shade-Sun / 2-3’/  Zone2

Common in the eastern US, where under ideal conditions it forms colonies, this is sometimes called Bead Fern because the dark fertile bodies resemble upright strands of  beads. In fertile conditions it can be a real spreader, so it is not appropriate for a small or formal setting. More tolerant of sun than most species, it also performs well in shade. We've heard that it is called Sensitive Fern for its innate ability to empathize, but others say it is just because the fronds are sensitive to the first hard frost. The rigid bead structures stay upright and decorative through winter.

616700  Selaginella uncinatta  -
Peacock Fern

Part Shade-Shade / 4-6"/  Zone 7-10

Selaginellas are not true ferns but they are closely related. They require a moisture retentive, high humus soil and protection from direct sun, and will not tolerate dryness. The leaves are finely divided, with good substance.  They are stoloniferous and spread to form a thick groundcover, ideal for use under small shrubs, azaleas, etc.

Selaginella uncinata, the Peacock Fern, is one of the most unusual plants we grow. Also known as Rainbow Moss, from certain angles the iridescent foliage is an almost unbelievably brilliant blue, changing with the slightest movement of vantage point.  The leaves themselves are finely cut and densely spreading, with the look of a beautiful and intricate oriental carpet, fitting for a plant of Chinese origins. Plants are only winter hardy when well established. We recommend extra protection the first winter or two. Northern gardeners may want to consider growing this as a pot plant.

616800 Thelypteris decursive-pinnata  -  Japanese Beech Fern

Part Shade-Shade / 18-24” / Zone4

An attractive Asian species with  light chartreuse green fronds, very upright in habit. This is a spreader, but a slow and steady one, unlike some near relatives that can be borderline invasive. It naturalizes beautifully in open woods.
