Hardy Ferns

BASKET CONTENTS          HOSTA CATALOG          FERNS PAGE 2

We cannot ship ferns to AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, NM, NV, OR, UT, WA, or WY

Hardy ferns are easy to grow and combine well with hostas, preferring the same conditions. They provide the fine texture and form that goes so well with hostas and adds contrast and interest that is especially important in large plantings.

All of our ferns are nursery propagated and shipped in containers.  We do not sell plants that have been collected in the wild. This not only protects wild populations, but potted, nursery propagated ferns are much easier to establish in the garden than plants dug in the wild and shipped bareroot.

615100  Athyrium filix-femina   -  Lady Fern

Part Shade-Shade / 24-30” / Zone 4-8

This fern was so beloved by the Victorians that there are literally hundreds of fancy leaved cultivars. The straight species is attractive on its own, with soft and airy fronds and a full form. Although delicate in appearance it is actually tough and easy to grow, and will even tolerate some dryness.

615200  Athyrium filix-femina 'Minutissimum'  -  Dwarf Lady Fern

Part Shade-Shade / 6-12” / Zone 4-8

This is a dwarf selection of our native Lady Fern.  While it stays much shorter than the species, the clump stays tight and fills in very thickly.  For its size it is a good, moderate spreader.

610200  Athyrium niponicum 'Pictum'  -  Japanese Painted Fern

Part Shade-Shade / 12-18” / Zone 4-9

If I didn't enjoy hostas so much, the Japanese Painted Fern might be my favorite plant for shady areas.   It's a terrific companion for hostas, providing the color and texture contrast that garden designers love.  Low growing and spreading, it is the most colorful of the hardy ferns, with silver covering most of the frond, sometimes with burgundy markings in the center. It is beautiful when used in mass but the graceful arching habit also looks great as a single specimen.

610200  Athyrium n. 'Regal Red'  -  Japanese Painted Fern 'Regal Red'

Part Shade-Shade / 12-18” / Zone 4-9

This is a new selection from Casa Flora. They say - “Handsome and ruffled, this high color selection is our most requested Painted Fern. The dark interior of the frond is contrasted by bright silver edges making each appear more than they are. The pinnules twist a little giving the frond a “fluffed-up” look.”

610300  - Athyrium filix-femina ssp. angustum forma rubellum  'Lady in Red'

Part Shade-Shade / 24-30” / Zone4

This the hottest and most sought after new fern. Selected from the Northern Lady Fern it combines that delicate airy look with brilliant burgundy red stipes (stems). This is so new we haven’t seen a mature specimen in person yet but if its half as showy as its publicity photos this will be a must have for the shady garden.

615600 Cystopteris bulbifera

Part Shade-Shade / 8-12” / Zone 3

This is a relatively fast growing and easy fern that is adaptable to many conditions. Fronds are bi-pinnate, relatively narrow and open in form. In addition to reproducing by spores this species also produces small bulblets on the underside of the fronds that fall off and become new plants. Known as Bulblet Bladder Fern and Berry Fern.

615640 Dryopteris x bissetiana  -  Beaded Wood Fern

Part Shade-Shade / 4' / Zone 5-9

The Beaded Wood Fern is a low growing evergreen, with a dense habit and substantial leathery fronds. The common name comes from the round sori on the underside of the frond that make an impression on the upper side.

615700  Dryopteris x celsa

Part Shade-Shade / 3-4' / Zone 5-9

Dryopteris x celsa is a native, naturally occurring, and fertile hybrid between Dryopteris goldiana and Dryopteris ludoviciana. It’s a relatively large erect fern, as are its parents, but added to that is a “hybrid vigor”... for us this is one of the most robust of this group. Frond color is a good dark green. In the wild it sometimes grows in the rich humus of rotting logs, hence the common name Log Fern.

615800 Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance'

Part Shade-Shade / 18” / Zone 5

This is a new colorful and more brilliant form of the Autumn Fern. The young fronds of this cultivar are lustrous and orange. Even the fronds at maturity, though green, hold their glossy sheen. The growth habit is identical to the Autumn but as a whole it is dramatically more showy. A wonderful evergreen addition to the fern garden.

616100 Dryopteris tokyoensis

Part Shade-Shade / 2-3’ / Zone5

This is one of our favorites of the Asian Wood Ferns. The relatively narrow fronds are stiffly upright, in a vase form from a central crown. It is sometimes described with light or yellow green color. While new fronds are light green, mature fronds of our clone have a rich, almost blue-green color.
