A Collection of Ten of My Favorites
If I started
over and picked 10 of my favorites tomorrow, it probably wouldn't be
the same list. There are so many great hostas that I don't see
how you can say that one is absolutely better than all the others,
or that these are the best ten. But if I was starting a new
hosta garden, it would certainly include every one of the plants
below

Blue Mouse Ears E & J Deckert 1998
This has often
been listed as a miniature, but it has been found to grow
larger than originally thought and the leaf size exceeds the
AHS limit for miniatures. Rounded blue leaves with
excellent substance form a tight mound. Really cute.

Bright Lights Aden NR
A larger and much faster growing form of tokudama
‘Aureonebulosa’. Leaves are heavily textured and puckered,
yellow with blue margins. As you can see by the pictures if
you click on the thumbnail, its appearance depends on the
amount of light it gets, with brighter coloring resulting
from more sun. It seems to handle quite a bit of sun here,
given sufficient water, but I think it looks much better in
medium light. White flowers

Fragrant Blue Aden 1988
Forms a nice clump of powdery blue, heart-shaped leaves. The
flowers are light lavender blue and somewhat fragrant. We
would recommend this plant for its intense blue color,
rather than its fragrance, which is not as strong as many
fragrant varieties.

533100 Guacamole
Solberg 1994
Frankly, I didn’t know why this plant was so popular until I
saw it in a large clump. If you see it as a small plant, the
coloring can be a bit subtle and, to me, it doesn't show
itself as well as when it gets big. It really is quite
impressive. It is a sport from ‘Fragrant Bouquet’ found in
tissue culture. It has rounded light green leaves with a
dark green margin. Flowers are light lavender and fragrant,
not as large as plantaginea, but flared open, up to
3" wide.

539800 June NEO Plants
1991
This is the gold centered form of
‘Halcyon’. The leaves are a rich, powdery gold, with a narrow blue
edge. The color is best in fairly bright light, tending to a muted yellow-green
in deep shade. Flowers are pale lavender. I doubt that too many would
disagree that this is one of the greatest hostas ever introduced.

Reptillian Sawyer NR
This is one of those plants that doesn’t look too exciting
when young and then knocks your socks off as it matures.
The blue heart-shaped leaves get nicely puckered,
slightly cupped with a piecrust edge. Very unusual and
striking. Light lavender flowers.
