MATURE SIZE AND LEAF COLOR |
Our Introductions
We are sorry we are
frequently sold out of a number of these plants. For the most
part, they are not propagated by tissue culture, so we are limited
to the number of plants we can produce by division. Many times we
cannot produce as many plants as we need to satisfy demand. |

502500 Angel Eyes Bridgewood Gardens NR
This is a white centered form of ‘Blue Angel’, similar to and possibly
identical to ‘Guardian Angel’. New leaves
emerge with a wide white center variegation, which causes a graceful
twist to the leaf, much like that of ‘Whirlwind’. As the leaf expands,
the blue edge widens and the leaf takes on the typical ‘Blue Angel’
shape. As the growing season progresses, the plant will have both
young twisted and older flattened leaves, along with the various
stages in between. The center variegation is viridescent, turning
green as the leaves age, but still remaining visible. The variegation
may not be visible on leaves that emerge in mid summer. The brightness
of the leaf center is affected by both temperature and nutrient level.
In past years, we have
offered this plant only as divisions of the original stock plant. We
have finally been able to get the plant propagated by tissue culture,
which allows us to lower the price significantly.

505100 Big Bopper Bridgewood Gardens NR
An ‘Uncle Albert’ hybrid with large glossy medium green leaves, wide
at the base and tapering to a sharp point. It’s kikutii background
is apparent from its leaf shape, its deeply impressed veins, and its
low spreading habit. Its flower scapes bend toward the ground and
are held somewhat horizontally, a trait it inherits from both H.
kikutii var. caput-avis and H. hypoleuca., from which ‘Uncle Albert’
is bred. Flowers are near-white.

510150 Braveheart Winterberry Farms Not Registered
This is our introduction of a plant that originated at Winterberry
Farms. We discovered this plant in a batch of tissue culture
liners of ‘Invincible’ we received from them. It is apparently a
tetraploid form of ‘Invincible’, with thicker, darker leaves,
glossy, with slightly wavy margins. Both its flower and scape are
larger than ‘Invincible’. I’m told by Bob Solberg that if it is a
true tetraploid (it has not been tested) the fragrance will also be
stronger, but I am no judge of such things.

511400 Buttercup Baby Bridgewood Gardens NR
Forms a tight mound of small, heart-shaped leaves. Color depends on
light level, ranging from chartreuse in low light to nearly white in
sun, but in bright light the leaves are a soft yellow. Leaves have
good substance for a mini. Purple flowers. This is a seedling from a
mix of open-pollinated tardianas, so parentage is unknown.

520800 Eleanor Rigby
Winterberry Farms/Bridgewood Gardens
NR
This is a tissue culture sport of ‘Sergeant
Pepper’ found by Jim Anderson at Winterberry Farms, named and introduced by us. This
plant has green leaves with a white margin. The parentage of the
plant is not obvious because the leaf has a normal size margin rather
than the very wide margin and narrow center of 'Sergeant Pepper'.

Judy Blue Eyes Bridgewood Gardens NR
A tardiana hybrid with small blue leaves with an
undulating (not piecrusted) edge. It is not
variegated, but it has a tiny, hair-line white edge around
the leaves, caused, I think, by the wax at the edge of
the leaf. Lavender flowers.

554550
Mountain Mist Bridgewood Gardens NR
This is a sport of 'Allegan Fog'. The only difference is that
'Mountain Mist' lacks the dark green border on 'Allegan Fog'. The plant emerges pure white in the spring, with just a bit of green
in the throat. Green speckles develop gradually and
progressively cover the leaf, as shown in the picture, taken in late
June. As the summer progresses, the leaves get darker, until the
speckling is no longer obvious. Because there is a significant
amount of green pigment in the leaf for a good part of the year, the
plant is quite vigorous.
Plants shipped will be single-eye
divisions, similar it size to the plant pictured.

562700 Purple Rain Bridgewood
Gardens NR
This is the first of our 'Uncle Albert' hybrids to be released, from a
cross with 'Halcyon' made in 1998. It's a medium size plant with
blue leaves, ovate with sharply pointed tips, slightly cupped, with
rippled edges. Leaf petioles are purple spotted. Flowers are pale
lavender.
At the 2002 First Look, a competition for new
hosta introductions, American Hosta Society judges named 'Purple
Rain' the best blue seedling and runner-up for best seedling in the show.

567800 Satisfaction Bridgewood Gardens 2000
This is a sport of 'Piedmon Gold' found here at our nursery. It forms a
mound about 3’ wide and has the same elegant form as ‘Piedmont Gold’, wide
and low growing, with nicely rippled, large, heart-shaped leaves. It has
the same rich gold color in its wide, irregular edge, but the center of
the leaf is dark green. When the plant matures, the gold margin measures
nearly 2" wide. Unless the plant is grown in the sun, the bright yellow
edge does not fade to cream or white, so the contrast holds through the
summer. Flowers are pale lavender, again identical to the parent.

read 'Getting Satisfaction', the saga of how we originally found the
plant, written in 1994.
In 2007, Walters Gardens, North America's
leading grower of wholesale perennials, selected 'Satisfaction' to be
one of the first 12 selections included in their new Designer Hosta™
Collection.
From their catalog: "Designer Hosta™
candidates are overwintered in each of the six testing sites for a
minimum of two growing seasons and evaluated based on the list of
criteria above. They are compared to all other cultivars known to the
specialty hosta growers, which often number 500 or more. Only those
cultivars that perform superbly in all of the testing sites nationwide
may become a member of our exclusive Designer Hosta™ Collection." |

570600 Sergeant Pepper
Bridgewood Gardens 2001
This is a seedling that we
selected here at the nursery and first offered for sale in the fall of
1995. It forms a medium sized mound of heart-shaped, wavy-edged leaves,
about 5" wide and 6" long. The foliage is chartreuse to gold,
depending on light intensity, with a medium green center streak, about
2" across at its widest point. The leaf has good, heavy substance,
some puckering, and tolerates sun well. The flowers are near white, with
just a slight tint of lavender.

577800 Surfer Girl Bridgewood Gardens 2000
With huge leaves and unusual variegation being all the rage in the
hosta world today, here I am introducing a new green miniature. I hope
there are some people out there who still like small hostas, because I
think this one is pretty cute. I’ve named it ‘Surfer Girl’ because of
the wavy edges on the foliage.
The lanceolate leaves are
sharply pointed and deeply rippled, dark green with a satiny sheen,
about 2 to 2½ inches long and 1 to 1¼ inches wide. The wavy edges of
the leaves are very pronounced and attractive. The plant is
stoloniferous and increases rapidly to form a mound about 12 to 15
inches wide. The tubular flowers are pale lavender with purple stripes
inside, borne on rather tall (18-24") scapes.

582400 Uncle Albert
Bridgewood Gardens NR
This plant is the result of a cross
between hypoleuca and kikutii ‘Caput Avis’ and anyone familiar with
these two will recognize the family resemblence. It forms a large, wide
mound. Before we divided it, our four year old stock plant, growing in
a 25 gallon container, was 48” wide and 18” tall. I suspect that a
mature plant would be larger, but we have had to keep dividing the plant
for production. The leaves are, 15” long and 12” wide, glossy medium
green, white beneath, with prominent veins and rippled edges.
The most unusual feature of
the plant is its flower scape and blooms. The scape is very dark
purple, spotted almost to the bud. The unopened bud is the largest I
have ever seen on a hosta, with a large vestigal leaf, up to 6” across
and 12” long, at the base of each bud. Some scapes are held upright,
arching at the top, while others lean and emerge lower in the foliage.
Each bud produces a large number of lavender flowers, and when they
first start to open, the flower head can be almost as large as a
hydrangea.
This plant has proven to be
one of my favorite breeders and has produced some excellent seedlings,
several of which we are currently offering.
