How We Grow Our Hostas
We grow most of our hostas here at the nursery. We
produce most of them by dividing older plants, but some, especially newer
varieties but also some older ones, are grown from tissue culture.
There are some varieties that we sell in such quantities
that we cannot produce enough ourselves and must purchase them from other
growers. We are very picky about where we get plants.
Nearly all of our plants are grown in 4½" containers,
though some miniature and small varieties may be grown in 3½" pots.
Western States require that we ship plants bare-root, but except to these
areas, plants are normally shipped in their growing pots.
We do not grow our plants in heated greenhouses. While
hostas grown indoors can be protected from the ravages of weather and
insects, and can be fed and watered constantly to optimize growth, we think
plants grown under more natural conditions are better able to adapt to the
garden. We provide a bit of shade, water when necessary, and a
reasonable amount of fertilizer, and that's about it. We give our
plants the same kind of care that you can easily provide in your own garden,
nothing extraordinary, no secret hormones or magic potions. We think
that's the best way to grow.
